"Andy Griffith is my favorite show of all time. I have a question about a song I heard him sing to someone who was in jail--something about dig my grave with a silver spade, dig it wide and deep....I so badly want the lyrics to that song and can't find them anywhere. If anyone knows where I can get them please let me know. Thanks" - Bill from Delaware

"Someone asked, regarding this episode, "what is fish muttle and what kind of fish is used"? Members of my family have always made fish muttle. We always used either catfish or rock fish, (also known as stripers). We always cooked it in an old black pot, usually in large quantities to feed a gathering. A few pounds of smoked side meat to start, then fish and onions and a little water. Cook it down to a fairly thick consistency, (it usually takes only 2 hours or less). When done, add a little margerine or butter. Then ENJOY !!! I must tell you - THIS DISH IS NOT FOR EVERYONE!!! It is definately an aquired taste. If you want to give it a try, here is a small recipie; 2 lbs SMOKED SIDE MEAT 20 lbs FISH 12 lbs ONIONS A LITTLE WATER (enough to cook it in) 1/2 lbs MARGERINE Give it a try. I LOVE IT !!! But remember, its not for every body. Brunswickreb@aol.com " - Tracy Clary from Brunswick County, Virginia

"I heard Andy Griffith being interviewed for TVLand and he says that the shows Make-up man named Ed Jenkins played banjo in the episodes with The Dillards, this struck me as odd because I am almost positive its Doug Dillard, is it not? My favorite line is by Briscoe Darling about his boys as they stood there stonfaced: "Their all keyed up"." - Matthew from San Rafael, Ca

"The tune "Old Joseph" is played in D#. On a 5-string banjo in G-tuning you capo up to the 7th fret and then tune up another 1/2 step (I know this is real high but if you're used to picking Old Joe Clark in G this works). An archtop banjo will sound best. I love that part where Andy and Barney have driven up the river, get out of the patrol car, and can hear the music wafting out of the woods!" - John from North Georgia

"This is one episode I get laughs out of involving the Darlings. It is so funny how Ernest T. Bass is throwing rocks in the windows and then when they do as he demands by getting a preacher to perform the wedding it is so funny when Barney puts the wedding dress on. I just can not get enough out of how right near the end Ernest T. Bass thinks Barney is a girl fro wearing that wedding dress when he says the line "If you do not take good care of Charlene I will have that lady sheriff come after you," I just can not get enough out of how he thinks Barney is a girl! "Regarding Ernest T Bass singing "Old Aunt Moriah," my grandmother (born 1909) grew up in east Alabama and sang that song about her mother who was named Moriah. We thought she made it up and had no idea the song came from somewhere else. (On second thought, maybe Andy Griffith learned it from my grandmother...). Anyone know where that came from??" - Mark from Alabama

"There seems to be a lot of confusion about the band who played "The Darling Boys' on TAGS. The group is called the Dillards and they appear on 6 episodes of the show. The orignal group is from Salem, Mo. They are Doug Dillard (banjo)and Rodney Dillard (guitar, dobro), Mitch Jayne (bass) and Dean Webb (mandolin). The group has recorded several CD's and were contemporarys of groups such as The Byrds who they actually toured with in the late 60's. The reason that the "boys" do not talk in most of the episodes is that Andy Griffith hired them based upon their looks and musical ability. The scripts for a 30 minute episode were already so full that working them into the dialog would have been difficult, therefore they remained silent. This has proved to be one of the funniest aspects of the episodes they appear on as the expressions on their faces are priceless! More information on the Dillards can be found in the Book "Everybody on the Truck-The story of the Dillards". " - Gregg from Arkansas

"I just watched the one-hour TAGS special. It was great to see everyone from this episode today, including Charlene, Ernest T. Bass, and the Dilliards (in addition to the regulars). Of course, Denver Pyle, who played the Darling family patriarch, passed away many years ago. Side note: Mr. Pyle also played the mountaineer on "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams" (think "greenhorn" and "number 9") and of course Uncle Jesse on the Dukes of Hazzard. Anyway, one thing that Mr. Griffith mentioned was that they felt that the Dilliards wouldn't be able to act, so it would be best to give them no lines at all. This doubled as a comic element, of course, and Denver Pyle (who was not a real-life "Dilliard") did a fine job as their father. Tonight's show was wonderful. Very warm, sentimental, and frankly hit the spot for me after a lifetime of watching the show." - Michael from Nashville

"In response to the question about the preacher, I think that was Dub Taylor, a veteran actor who has appeared more than a few times with Andy Griffith through the years. There have been quite a few references to the Darlings and the Dillards. TWO of the "Darlings" were in fact, Dillard brothers, Rodney (guitar) and Doug (banjo). The other two were Dean Webb (Mandolin) and Mitch Jane (Bass). Mitch, Rodney, and Doug were from the small south-central Missouri town of Salem. Mitch was a teacher and local radio personality before joining the Dillards. There are several CDs available of their music, some of it featuring the music they performed on TAGS. A search of "The Dillards" on Google will get you started toward considerable resources about the Dillards and their time on TAGS. Hope this helps. Gary" - Gary from St. Peters, MO

I know he did alot of voice work for cartoons. I think he goes back to the Sid Ceaser era (Your Show Of Shows). "Candice: Here are the lyrics you're looking for. Hugh Salty Dog Blues Standin' on the corner with the lowdown blues Great big holes in the soles of my shoes Honey let me be your salty dog. Let me be your salty dog Or I won't be your dog at all Honey let me be your salty dog. Lookit here Sal, I know you Run in your stockin' and worn out shoes Honey let me be your salty dog. Let me be your salty dog Or I won't be your dog at all Honey let me be your salty dog. Down in the wildwood sittin on a log Finger on the trigger and my eye on a hog Honey let me be your salty dog. Let me be your salty dog Or I won't be your dog at all Honey let me be your salty dog. I pulled the trigger and the gun said 'go' The shot fell over in Mexico Honey let me be your salty dog Let me be your salty dog Or I won't be me your dog at all Honey let me be your salty dog. Let me be your salty dog Or I won't be your dog at all Honey let be your salty dog. " - Hugh Willingham from La Mesa, CA. USA

"Well,we've seen a lot of introductory episodes for certain characters & it's this one that introduces ERNEST T. BASS whom is determined to breakup the marriage of CHARLENE DARLING & DUD WALES (it's pronounced WALSH with a silent L) & so BRISCOE heads down into the low lands & MAYBERRY to flush out ANDY in order to straighten out ERNEST T. BASS & possibly send him to SING-SING FEDERAL PRISON (even though an unseen OTIS CAMPBELL may have let ERNEST T. out his cell in "ERNEST T. BASS JOINS THE ARMY" most likely)! Any way,as things turn out they fail to tell him off so as BRISCOE said "Tommorrow bein' SUNDAY the circuit preacher will be by." Therefore, they hold a quiet little ceremony with the real CHARLENE hidind in the bushes while BARNEY is wearing the wedding gown. Then ERNEST T. in this episode shoots off a WINCHESTER 44-40 LEVER ACTION RIFLE for the only time. Then a quick rush through the vows & suddenly ERNEST T. thinks he got a hold of some bad squeezings or something & is chasing BARNEY back to the DARLINGS CABIN. Then after shaking hands with DUD the boys begin to play & ERNEST T. tries asking BARNEY to dance with him." - TOM McMILLAN from MOREHEAD,KY. (currently)

"The post about the Darlings not being able to speak because of union rules against non-members is completely false. In fact, in episode #88, they do have a speaking role. The purpose of non-speaking roles was purely for comedic effect." - Opie Taylor, Sr. from Mayberry

"I love the Darling's and Earnest T., so when they appear together, it'a a real treat. The four Darling brothers were an actual band and still perform on occasion as the Dilliards. My wife and family went to Carnegie Hall here in Lewisburg to see them. They were great. I bought a CD with their music and a book about their adventures. The one brother who played the bass and smoked the pipe did most of the talking and was very amusing. Great music." - D. Baker from Lewisburg, West Virginia

I thought that was just part of the show. I guess it is another example of the brilliant writers on Mayberry if life gives you lemons make lemonade. Whether it was an accident or on purpose I still loved it when Andy would say, Howdy boys and get nothing but a blank stare." - Ryan Warren from Kanorado Kansas

" Yes the Darlins were an actual bluegrass band called The Dillards. Doug Dillard, the banjo player, who to the best of my knowlege was the oldest brother and band leader, eventually left the group and was replaced by Steve Cooley, a banjo/guitar/mandolinist living in Louisville Ky." - Brian from Florida

"During the song Dooley, the vocals and harmonies were perfectly mixed, and the guitar, mandolin, and banjo mix was perfectly recorded. Yet they looked as though they were all playing along and ended on the same beat. Looks like they were just playing along to a recording. Hard to believe that was live. Old Aunt Maria, jump in the fi-ah, Fire too hot, jump in the pot, Pot to black, jump in the crack, Crack to high, jump in the sky, Sky to blue, jump in canoe, Canoe too shallow, jump in the tallow, Tallow too soft, jump in the loft, Loft to rotten, jump in the cotton, Cotton so white she stay there all night.
